Kanchipuram, the “Land of Thousand Temples” an Kanchipuram, the “Land of Thousand Temples” and one of the seven holiest Hindu cities, reached new heights as the capital of the mighty Pallava dynasty. The Pallava rulers, particularly Nandivarmana II & Narasimhavarmana Rajasimha, undertook ambitious temple construction projects in Kanchipuram.
•
Today, Kanchipuram is a bustling centre and hub of silk manufacture. Laced both with mythological and historical remains, Kanchipuram is a perfect destination for a day trip from Chennai.

|| NEW BLOG UP || • In Hinduism, gift of water i || NEW BLOG UP ||
•
In Hinduism, gift of water is upheld as a sacred religious act. In the Puranas, 'purta' is a meritorious act denoting the building of temples, excavation of tanks and reservoirs, and digging of stepwells. The epic Mahabharata championed the charitable act of gifts and wells. Other 'Dharma Shastras' affirm that water as a gift of piety releases a person from the cycle of rebirth.
•
The Rani Ki Vav of Patan is a prime example of a ‘purta’ act by a widowed queen. It was commissioned by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her husband, Chalukyan king Bhimadeva I.
•
Built akin to an inverted temple, it took 20 years to complete the entire construction. The stepwell is characterized by 7 layers of stairs, 212 ornate pillars, and as many as 500 intricate sculptures.
•
The outstanding Rani Ki Vav was declared a nationally protected monument in 1951 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. It has also been featured in the INR 100 currency note.

|| TERRACOTTA TEMPLES OF BOLPUR || • In Itonda, || TERRACOTTA TEMPLES OF BOLPUR ||
•
In Itonda, one of the most fascinating temples is not a terracotta one. At first glance, it seems to be a decaying Zamindar palace.
•
But, in reality, it is a ‘Dalan’ type of temple built in the double-storied Chandni style. This is quite a rare occurrence in the scene of Bengal's temple architecture.
•
The temple is called Shridhar Temple. It was built in 1844 CE. Vishnu was worshipped here as the “Shalgram Shila”.
•
The temple is characterized by Corinthian columns, arched doors, and a flat roof. The interior has brilliant stucco works also.

•
The third place near Bolpur which possesses a treasure trove of terracotta temples is Itonda, an otherwise nondescript village.
•
The most remarkable specimen of terracotta temple in Itonda is the Jor Bangla Kali Temple, which was constructed in the 19th century.
•
Jor Bangla is a classic 'chala' style of Bengali temple architecture. In the Jor Bangla style, the temple appears as two thatched huts conjoined together and having a single roof.
•
The Jor Bangla Temple of Itonda is an active temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali.
•
This temple has been renovated nicely. Also, terracotta works found here are top-notch. Panels depict Vishnu’s Dashavatar and Shakti’s Dashmahavidya. Specific terracotta figures are European, while some bearded figures are presumably courtly nobles.

The second significant temple cluster of Surul lies just beside the Rajbari/Sarkar Bari of the town.
•
First, you will come across two identical Shiva Temples (Photo 1). They are built in Rekha Deul style. As per the foundation stone, the temples date back to 1831.
•
One of the temples showcases an arch panel of the coronation of Rama–Sita (Photo 3). The other temple has a terracotta carving of Durga slaying Mahisasura. Durga is also accompanied by her children – Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kartick (Photo 2).
•
The other temple is the Lakshmi Janardan Temple, built in the “Pancha Ratna” style, having five pinnacles.
•
The temple is in a dilapidated state. However, some of the beautiful terracotta carvings can still be identified. The grandest of the panels depicts Rama battling Ravana (Photo 4).
•
There are also many depictions of Krishna Leela (Photos 5-7).
•
As the temple was being renovated, we could not take a full photograph of the temple and just managed to click few sculptures.

The other temple is constructed in the Rekha Deul style. Here, the terracotta works are nicely preserved (Photo 3).

•
Surul is a small town, located in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. It lies just 5 km away from Bolpur, the home to Shantiniketan which was founded by Rabindranath Tagore.
•
During British rule, Surul played an essential role as a trade and commercial centre. East India Company’s John Cheap had established a commercial residency here.
•
Later, one Srinivas Sarkar took charge of the Zamindari estate, leading to the foundation of Surul Rajbari or Sarkar Bari. The Sarkar Bari helmed many socio-economic developments in the area. The Sarkar Bari eventually came to be called Surul Rajbari.
•
The pristine mansion was built in the 1750s. It is still in good condition and holds its 250-year-old Durga Puja every year with much grandeur.

•
The fame of Bolpur primarily rests on Shantiniketan, Sonajhuri, and Kopai riverside. However, the outskirts of Bolpur are replete with ruins of some outstanding terracotta temples.
•
These temples are mostly found in Surul, Supur, and Itonda. They are mostly located within a 5 km radius from Bolpur. Some of the exquisite ones are left utterly desolated.
•
Today, we take you to Supur's "Jora" or twin Shiva Temples. One of the temples belongs to the 18th century and was built in the Rekha Deul style with ridged turrets. The other temple is a 19th-century ridged Rekha Deul type. Both of them were built within a single enclosure.
•
Recurring themes of terracotta panels on the walls show Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu playing ‘kirtan’ and dancing with his disciples, a five-headed man dancing with others, and a child (presumably Lord Krishna) being bathed by four women (Photo 2).
•
The coronation of Rama & Sita is another favourite subject of the terracotta artists (Photo 3-4).
•
The walls of both temples are replete with terracotta works, manifesting both divine and floral motifs.
•

•
Our visit to Agra coincided with incessant rainfall courtesy of the retreating monsoon. Neither did we experience the Taj during the sunrise nor the sunset. For two straight days, the weather remained gloomy and the sky poured.
•
We had the 9 PM slot booking for the night viewing of the Taj Mahal. It was still drizzling and we had no hope left for this anticipated escapade.
•
Thankfully, the rain had stopped once we reached the gates of the Taj. However, the Full Moon remained hidden underneath the layers of rain clouds. Though we did not catch Taj glistening under the moonlight, the nightscape of the monument was nonetheless breathtaking.
•
The cloudy night view reaffirmed our opinion of the Taj Mahal. It doe not matter whether it is day or night, sunrise or sunset, sunny or cloudy, summer or winter; the monument, celebrated as a symbol of love, looks resplendent in every situation. Every circumstance turns trivial before the magnificence of the Taj Mahal.

🚨 NEW BLOG UP 🚨 • The Kulik Bird Sanctuary 🚨 NEW BLOG UP 🚨
•
The Kulik Bird Sanctuary, located in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, is often billed as one of the largest bird sanctuaries of Asia. Not only this, it is also one of the most important heronries in India as well as in Asia.
•
Heronry refers to the breeding and nesting colony of Herons. Heronries are limited to a few pockets throughout the world, among which Kulik Bird Sanctuary is of great importance. Every year, it provides sanctuary to countless Asian Open-Bill Storks for their nesting and breeding in the monsoon season.
•
The Asian Open-Bill is a distinctive long-legged, wading bird belonging to the stork family. It is greyish in colour, with shiny black wings and pale pink legs.
•
It possesses a strong beak, characterized by a gap between the two mandibles that explains its name. The gap of the mandibles is presumed to be an adaptation which helps them to prey on their favourite food, the Apple Snail.
•
Every year, the Asian Open Bill Storks flock to Kulik with the onset of the monsoon. They scan the area, select the tree for building nests, and finalize their partners.
•
Once the nests are completed, the birds mate and eventually, the females lay 3-5 eggs. During this time, the partners take turns in incubating the eggs.
•
As per the prevalent conservation status, the Asian Open-Bill Stork belongs to ‘Least Concern’ group. However, their nesting and breeding grounds are under threat owing to increasing environmental pollution and undue human interference.
•
Hence, protecting their nesting areas is of utmost significance. In this regard, the Kulik Bird Sanctuary’s endeavour is truly laudable.

One of the most famous temples of Odisha is certainly the Mukteshwar Temple of Bhubaneswar.
•
Dedicated to Shiva, Mukteswar is a unique temple in terms of its ground-breaking architecture. It dates back to the 10th century CE.
•
This temple represents the culmination of innumerable experiments conducted by the Kalinga artisans. It is distinguished for its “torana” at its entrance and sculpted ceiling inside the “jagamohana” or sanctum.
•
This is one of the few active temples in Bhubaneswar. Here, Shiva is worshipped as Mukteswar, or the Lord of Freedom (from the endless cycle of life and death). The temple is situated in a garden complex known as Siddharanya or ‘Forest of Siddha’.
